The expander enables quiet recordings that have the rich body of Neve color. The color comes from the units modules and each has a flavor. In addition to the Red NEVE knob, I use the gain in the compression module to bring my recording up to a robust level without maxing out the NEVE knob. This and the EQ each has a flavor, and I prefer the compression modules warm presence (and gain knob), to the EQ's body. (This is with compression settings off, because this is a raw recording being printed live).

I get the sound I want, and eliminate the noise I don't want during the recording.

I have to write another review after using the Neve 88RS plugin for a long time. This plugin has really helped me take my mixes to the next level with how good it sounds.
