LUNA Studio is worth it if you want the mixing tools of a professional studio built into the DAW rather than bought separately. Console, tape, and summing extensions run inside the mixer, 30 UAD plug-ins and a set of instruments come included, and ARA tools for tuning, editing, and mastering open directly in the timeline. For anyone finishing records rather than only capturing ideas, that covers all of the software you would otherwise need to assemble piece-by-piece.
LUNA Studio is different because the emulation of an analog signal path is part of the DAW itself. Tape, console, and summing emulations are built into the mixer rather than inserted as plug-ins, so a session runs through modeled hardware from the first track through the mixdown. The UAD plug-ins included come from decades of studying the original gear, and they are the same titles engineers have used on records for years.
LUNA Studio adds the professional layer on top of the DAW you get in LUNA Free. That means LUNA Extensions with API console and summing plus Studer and Ampex tape, 30 UAD plug-ins and instruments, six ARA plug-ins, hardware inserts for your outboard gear, and advanced smart features including stem separation and lyric transcription. Recording, arranging, and mixing work the same way in both.
LUNA Studio is the new version of LUNA Pro, and it includes everything LUNA Pro did and more. If you already own LUNA Pro, you can visit the product page to see your upgrade price. This is more than a name change, it’s a large update with many new features.
There are two ways to get LUNA Studio: buy it outright, or subscribe to UAD Spark Studio. Buying it outright means it is yours to keep, along with its UAD plug-ins, ARA tools, and extensions. Subscribing to UAD Spark Studio includes LUNA Studio plus the full UAD native plug-in library and every new native plug-in as they are released.
LUNA Extensions are analog emulations built into LUNA Studio's mixer rather than loaded as plug-ins. They include the API console channel strip and summing, along with Studer and Ampex tape, so your tracks run through modeled analog gear the way they would in a large studio. Because they are integrated with the mixer, the analog character is part of how the session sounds rather than something added at the end.
Hardware inserts let you patch your outboard gear into a LUNA Studio session as though it were a plug-in. LUNA handles the routing and the delay compensation, and you can save an insert as a preset for instant recall later. That keeps analog compressors, EQs, and preamps in the mix without re-patching by hand every time you open the session.
LUNA Studio includes ARA plug-ins that open directly in the timeline. Celemony Melodyne Essential handles vocal tuning and pitch, Noiseworks VoiceAssist Basic manages dynamics, Steinberg SpectraLayers Go repairs and edits recordings, and Steinberg WaveLab Go covers mastering. Because they run as ARA tools, you edit in place instead of exporting and reimporting.
LUNA Studio's smart features handle the slow parts of production. Stem separation splits a song into individual elements, lyric transcription powered by Moises lets you navigate a session by words instead of waveforms, and tempo detection has LUNA follow along with your playing. Audio to MIDI turns a recorded part into MIDI you can edit and reassign to any instrument.
Stem separation in LUNA Studio splits a finished song into separate tracks, up to six at a time. You drop the song into a session and LUNA pulls out elements like vocals, drums, bass, and guitar, so you can mute, replace, or rebuild any of them. Producers use it for remixing, for practice, and for pulling reference elements into a working session.
LUNA Studio includes 30 UAD plug-ins covering preamps, EQs, channel strips, compressors, tape and saturation, reverbs, delays, modulation, and guitar amps. The collection is built to carry a whole record, from tracking to mixing to mastering. A UAD Spark Studio subscription expands this to the full UAD native library.
LUNA Studio includes UAD instruments that are voiced for records rather than left as stock sounds. The set covers synths, organ, and piano, with Opal, PolyMAX, Waterfall B3, and Ravel, plus ChordAXE for building chord progressions quickly. They load directly into a LUNA Studio session alongside the included plug-ins.
LUNA Studio runs on both macOS and Windows. The Extensions, plug-ins, instruments, and smart features are the same on either platform.
LUNA Studio works with Apollo audio interfaces and is accelerated on both Apollo and Volt interfaces. Tracking through an Apollo gives you realtime monitoring through UAD DSP while LUNA Studio handles the recording and arrangement. You record through Apollo's inputs and monitor with near zero latency while the session builds up around you.
LUNA Studio works with any audio interface on macOS and Windows, and UA hardware is not required. You select your interface as LUNA Studio's input and output the way you would in any DAW. Apollo and Volt interfaces are more deeply integrated with LUNA than others, which tightens tracking and monitoring, but they are optional.
LUNA Studio hosts VST3 and AU plug-ins and virtual instruments, so the tools you already own work inside it. Your existing plug-ins sit alongside the UAD titles and Extensions that come built in, in the same session.
If you buy LUNA Studio outright, it stays yours whether or not you subscribe to anything else. If you get LUNA Studio through a UAD Spark Studio subscription, your access to it is tied to an active subscription.
